synching with the output of a UPS

Is the output of a UPS necessarily"in sych with its input or does the double transition cause it to be out of phase. More to the point, if one were to close transition the output of a UPS with it's maintenance bypass switch fed from the same system (i.e. in synch with the input of the UPS), would that be a very bad idea.

Assuming the answer is an emphatic YES, can one close transition with the output of a static bypass switch? Again provided that the sources are in synch?

Thanks,

Mike

I UPS system is typically designed to closed transition to maintenance wraparound bypass and open transition to its static bypass switch.

Typically UPS output syncs with the bypass. IT only gets wacky when you insert a delta-wye transformer it might not expect because it would then shift 30 deg.

big help and by the way

big help and by the way

thank you gentlemen - that was a big help.

By the way, is there a method on this forum to click a button acknowledging the helpfulness of feedback received. i.e. sometimes, I want to essentially say thank you and let others know when someone has been very helpful such as is the case here, but do not need to add another message to the string.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, it's called PayPal...

To your original issue though, there are many different types and options when it comes to UPS systems. If you want a bumpless transfer, that generally means a static bypass, ie solid state using SCRs that will synchronize to the line phase angle, followed by a mechanical switch to short the SCRs so there is no heat. This then also means the UPS must be monitoring phase angle, not just voltage levels, and all that means $$$. So you need to make sure the UPS has it because some do, some don't.

Just type "Thank You". If you are really pressed for time "TY" gets the job done.
