We have a 1500 hp Electric Machinery synchronous motor on site that has been causing alot of problems on planned stops and trips. Every time this motor stops we find that something on the brushless wheel is damaged. Either a Diode, SCR, or Sync rite module is trashed. Every time we need to start this motor we are replacing the wheel with a rebuilt and tested wheel.
This motor is critical to maintaning boil off pressures in our LNG tanks so when ops needs it we need to get it running. We have done extensive troubleshooting and no sucess yet. This even happens when we stop the motor with no load or it trips with load.

I have a little experience with synchronous motors in this range - but not anything that would give me a clue about this. My only recomendations are likely ones you have already done. Dig out the tech manuals and call the MFGs' tech department. My experience with EM is they are excellent to deal with. Depending on who built the control equipment, you may have to call both the mfg and a package assembler.

I'll be curious to what you find out.

PS: What's a "Sync rite module"? I'm not familiar with that.

Again this is likely things you have already considered:

Is this a new installation and problem has happened since commisssioning?

Is this an older installation and problem has been happening since recorded history?

is this a new problem that has cropped up on a machine that has always been okay?

The scenerio you have will reflect on the troubleshooting techniques.

Thanks for the link. I noticed on that site that the heat sinks are insulated from the diode wheel. I need to check tomorrow but I dont think ours are insulated like they should be. Thanks for your help.
