Syracuse, NY -- A 12-year-old girl playing in an inflatable pool Friday evening was electrocuted and later pronounced dead, Syracuse police said.
The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. at 102 Second North St.
The victim, Paige Scheel, was filling an inflatable pool with water in her backyard, Sgt. Tom Connellan said.
According to a witness, Scheel either picked up an extension cord or electric pump that was that was plugged into an outlet, immediately began shaking and fell face-first into the pool.
Her friend tried to pull her out of the pool, but received a jolt of electricity, Connellan said.
Scheel was unresponsive when emergency responders arrived. She was taken to Upstate University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Scheel's friend was not seriously injured. Police are continuing to investigate.
