How would you get t ratings on lights in a wastewater plant where the hazardous gas is not known ? Any hazard can enter the area. Is there t ratings on any other equipment we need to worry about ?

In absence of a known material(s), methane (Group D, 630?C) and hydrogen sulfide (Group C, 260?C) are presumed. Methane is usually the dominant component of all the volatile material in sewer gases, but it?s the hydrogen sulfide we smell.

As a general requirement of 500.8(C)(4), the "T-Code" (T-Classification) should already be marked on the luminaires. Even the provision in 500.8(C)(6)(a) that allows general-purpose equipment that are permitted for use in Division 2 to be unmarked does not apply to luminaires.

T ratings

Every plant is required to make available to anyone working in the plant what gases are present. Ask for the material safety data sheets (MSDS). It is the responsibility of the plant, through a PE, to define the hazardous location and the class and division of the area.

The T ratings are based on thos gases or vapors present.
