I know many ballast bypass LED T8's have line and neutral designations. If an unqualified person replaces a lamp and fails to get the polarity correct, is it a big deal?

Obviously, you've got either a single-ended or double-ended configuration. One way will function, the other will not. I am not sure if any damage will occur to to the lamps if wired incorrectly.

I think most manufacturers have moved away from the single end configuration. Much easier and quicker to do the double end. With the single end, the other end is insulated dummy pins, so the lamp just won’t work if it is put in backwards.

Just have to make sure the socket isn't shunted when using single end tubes.
