Consider a new installation in an existing industrial facility. Only qualified individuals will be accessing this panel while energized.
A new machine panel (480/277Y 100A supply) will be installed. As you know, working clearances and space is a huge challenge in exisiting old plants. In this case, increasing the setback requires building structural changes or machinery move.
The measure distances (to grounded parts on the other side of the panel working space) are as follows:
Edge of panel door handle - 38"
Face of panel door - 41"
Face of panel - 42"
Exposed live part (with panel door open) - 50"
In your opinion, does this meet 2008 NEC. I say yes common sense prevails.
