Table 110.31 Compliance

Does Table 110.31 apply to the side of a medium voltage switchgear? The live parts would never be accessible (?)

I'd say no. 110.34 says there shall be clear working space in "the direction of access to live parts" which usually means the front, and sometimes the back. There is also a specific note in the exception that states what rear clearance needs to be if it's required for access to non-electrical parts.

And since switchgear is normally made to be installed in a line up (side by side sections), I say they are generally designed so side access is not required.
