Table 220.3(A) General Lighting Loads by Occupancy

I am designing new lighting for a Squash Club. It has 7 courts plus viewing gallery, showers, & lounge. The fixture types have been chosen to match international standards for lumens required for the courts.

This type of Occupany is not defined in Table 220.3(A). If an Occupancy is not defined can I use the actual fixture VA"s?

Annex D, Example D3, Store building states that I must use the larger of the acutual connected load versus the lighting loads shown in Table 220.3(A). If the occupancy is not listed, than I should be able to use the actual, correct??

I need guidance for my load cal's for which type of occupancy.

Since this facility has squash courts, why not use the 2 VA per ft^2 allowed for ?court rooms?? (Sorry, couldn?t resist).

When I get involved in a project for which the occupancy is not listed on Table 220.3(A), I try to find the nearest logical match. In your case, I would use the 1 VA per ft^2 allowed for ?auditoriums.? Then I would calculate the actual VA for the selected fixtures (using the fixture rating, even if the selected light bulbs use a lower amount of power). I would submit as my final calculation whichever of these two gives the higher load.

Although the NEC has lighting loads per sq ft, many states have energy codes which are much lower per sq ft than the NEC for what is acutally installed. You have to size the service per the NEC and install the lighting per the energy code.
