I think it's a good question, I'll be interested to see what others say. My opinion would be yes, it's okay. 705.12(D)(2) is pretty vauge, it just says 'rating' which seems to me is open any of the various ways of determining conductor size.

I've certainly seen it done a few times.
 
Smart$, here's a question for you. Suppose the main feeder is tapped (load side) to a fused disco for the solar. Does it still comply with all of 310.15(B)(7)?
I believe so. It would still be a main feeder, as it will still serve all the loads associated with the dwelling. "Solar" isn't a load, is it? However, I don't believe you can actually "tap" the feeder... you'd have to splice it with the same-rated size to comply with the "120% rule".
