How does the code calculate the minimum volume for a (4x2-1/8x1-1/2) j-box? With my calculation it should be 12 cu. in. but in the table it shows 10.3

You are most likely figuring outside dimensions and they are going with true volume on the inside of the box.

I came up with 12.75- outside?

The allowable cu in should be marked on the box.

Here is thread that started last year (07-27-2006) and rambled on for 5 pages with 48 replies and almost 3000 views, finally ending a month ago (02-02-2007).

I think you'll find you answer there....if not, just add to the post ~ it's not "offically" done yet

box volume

while teaching box fill it was brought to our attention that the volumes listed in NEC 314.16 are less than if you do the calcs yourself. does anyone know why.
