I had asked a question regarding table 430.52 in a previous post but this question though related to the same code section is not the same question so I have opened a new thread.

I was wondering if anyone knew why the table has "Maximum" in regards to sizing the OCPD for the motor, but then in the table it allows you to exceed the maximum by using the next higher standard OCPD if the calculated value does'nt correspond to a standard size OCPD as per 240.6(A).

I do not have a problem with the sizing per say, what is kind of confusing. Has there ever been a proposal to change the wording to something else?

Thanks

I believe it really comes down to the idea that it is acceptable since the breaker/fuse is not for motor overload.

IV. Motor Branch-Circuit Short-Circuit and
Ground-Fault Protection
430.51 General. Part IV specifies devices intended to protect
the motor branch-circuit conductors, the motor control apparatus,
and the motors against overcurrent due to short circuits
or ground faults.
