Article 406.11Tamper resistant Receptacles In Dwelling Units. (2008 code)
In ALL AREAS specified in 210.52 all 125 volt, 15 and 20 amp receptacles shall be listed tamper resistant receptacles.

I think this is EXTREME as well. Do they even MAKE tamper resistant GFCI receptacles?? so every new house built has to be 'tamper resistant' gee whizz. i was just checking out the price of these receptacles, they run about $5.00 a piece compared to the .39 cents regular type receptacles.

Im sorry, but i do NOT need the government telling me how to protect my children!! I can see them required in day care enviroments but in EVERY HOME?? and if im interperting the code right this INCLUDES gfci in the bathrooms and kitchens, basements etc.. Please correct me if im wrong

I have to say that I am so much against big brother telling me how to me raise my kid. However I don't see that this is a situation that calls for that card to be thrown out... Is it really the government making you raise your kid a certain way... The typical homeowner needs to be able to purchase a home knowing it was built safely without having to understand it. This may be going to far or maybe not. I do feel like it is geared at protecting those people. Beside I think the price will go down as they start pumping out Tamper resistant Receptacles in expectation of the 2008 NEC being adopted.

but seriously, i grew up around regular outlets as did most people and we are fine. If a home owner feels their kids will stick something in or get shocked by the receptacles (for not watching their kids) they they can buy those .20 cent plastic safety caps. Im sorry, but these $5.00 a piece duplex tamper resist. receptacles is going too far!! I do not need a NPEC (National POLITICAL Electrical Code) trying to help me raise my kids. this is just a money issue. going from a .40 cent receptacle to one that cost at least $5.00 a piece. Not only i do NOT believe the price will go down, if anything it wil go up, why you ask?? well the cost of labour and material tomake them. ;)

I probably stuck things into recepticles at least 5 times before I turned 6. Just think, if my parents had installed tamperproof outlets, not only would I not have become utterly fascinated with this amazing shocky thing, I might have gone around sticking my finger elsewhere. (maybe girls)

"When we were kids, there weren't that many dumb kids because we had toys that would kill you. Remember lawn darts? Oh, we lost a lot of dumb kids on that one, didn't we? OK, you go stand down there. I'm gonna throw this dart. You can be goalie. OWWWWW!!!! That one doesn't count, OK?"

"The playgrounds, they're all made of plastic. When we were kids it was made of steel, and someone came out once a day and sharpened it. There was nothing to break your fall. We had blacktop. And you'd look down and see the skin from other kids laying on top of the blacktop."

We have discussed the sheer stupidity of this code change before in other places on this forum, and it still pisses me off to no end. Pierre Balarge brings up some great points in one of his previous postings. I can't believe this was even considered much less passed into the new code book. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!

Okay we need to get something straight, the NEC is not the government, however, your government may choose to adopt the NEC as a set of rules, and if that is the case you might have a say in whether your AHJ adopts it or ammends it.

Even more than that, we're the "Big Brother" that everyone is talking about. The code is written by trades people, inspectors, industry, testing labs, etc.

Don't just complain, get involved in the process. Join your local IAEI chapter or other groups that are involved in the trade.

Kind of like sitting at home and saying "Bush is an idiot, if I voted I sure wouldn't have voted for him."
