Tamper Resistant receptacles

Are these required in a commercial building?? It is a church and has 3 rooms for day care. This is is an add on to an existing building and the existing building has tamper proof covers in the day care rooms. I was just curious because I want to just use the covers in the rooms. I bid and started the job in 2007, does this matter??

Tamper resistant receptacles are not required in a daycare under the 2005 NEC.

The only place they are required in the 2005 NEC is in pediatric location as specified in 517.18(C).

Check your local building code and state statutes. Sometimes there are special rules for children educational facilities. However, this usually does not apply to private or religous occupancies.

Chris, you are correct; however, the 2008 Edition of the NEC, Section 406.11 states, "Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Dwelling Units. In all areas specified in 210.52, all 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles shall be listed tamper-resistant receptacles." If your area has adopted the 2008 edition, this rule is in effect unless it was not accepted on the local level. For what it is worth, Indiana is in the process of adopting the NEC with the Indiana amendments. :cool:
 
But be sure to check your spec book. In some cases, someone will request them. I've installed them in curch nurseries and daycare centers.

You are correct, the reason that I posted just from the 2005 is that the OP said the project was started in 2007.

Just went over this today in my 2008 code review class.

You do not need to install tamper resistant receptacles in a commercial building even if it has a daycare. It is only required in a dwelling unit. If the day care was in someones house that would be different.

This change was all about the money! Not the children
