Can someone please direct me to the correct article where the tampering of
individual circuit breakers is prohibited.

I have a contractor that has taped some individual circuit breakers so that
they will not trip.

Thanks!

Even with tape on them, they will trip free when needed no matter what.

Products must be used within their listing/tested configuration. It is unusual that a circuit breaker would be listed for oepration with tape on the handle. 110.3(b)

I think 110.3(B) has what you need. But be aware that it is not possible to secure a breaker handle in a way that prevents the breaker from tripping. The tripping mechanism is entirely internal to the breaker, and the handle is not involved in the trip process (other than being driven to its middle position). There are occasions in which it is desireable to hold a breaker handle in the closed position, and there are UL listed attachments that can accomplish that task. This would be to prevent inadvertent operation, not to prevent tripping.

I would have beat you to the draw, Ron, if I hadn't taken an extra minute to verify my code citation.

I don't think tape is a violation of 110.3(B) but who knows. :)

240.80 Method of Operation. Circuit breakers shall be
trip free
and capable of being closed and opened by manual
operation. Their normal method of operation by other than
manual means, such as electrical or pneumatic, shall be
permitted if means for manual operation are also provided.

Trip Free means that they will trip regardless of the handle position.

There are even code sections that require locking some breaker handles on so that they cannot be manually turned off.
