Shouldn't make a difference...any attempt would be a violation of 408.35

You Can Install Them ., However You May Not Be Aloud To, Check The Rating And Model Of The Panel It Might Be A 30/42 Circ Panel In Which Case It Would Be Ok . If Its A Striaght 42 Circ Panel The Answer Is No.

Can you? Yes, they make non-CTL CH tandems. It is physically possible. It's just not permitted in 42 space panels. While you may not have over 42 circuits when you count any double poles, there is no 42 space panel in current manufacture that will take tandems of the CTL variety.

Check 408.35 - "For the purposes of this article, a 2-pole circuit breaker shall be considered two overcurrent devices; a 3-pole circuit breaker shall be considered three overcurrent devices."

It doesn't matter if there are 2-poles or 3-poles. The 42 OC rule is not counting circuits, but poles.

Last week I saw QO panel with 56 circuits in it. It was only rated for 42. Some "sparky" had added 14 non-ctl "piggy back" breakers in it. I believe that it was installed that way originally when the house was built.
It was the most crowded panel that I've ever witnessed.
So...yes you can. Is it legal?...NO.

Okay, thanks.

Now then, if you had breakers that were extra wide, like shunt trips, undervoltage releasers, bell alarm contacts, etc., they would take up an extra "slot" but not count towards the 42 count.

A panel has to be rated for tandem breakers, I belive. Putting them in ANY 42 circuit panel would violate 408.35.

Not ANY panel, only a lighting and appliance branch panelboard has a 42 circuit limitation. A power panelboard can have more than 42 breaker slots.

That's true. I've seen an I-Line panelboard with QO adapters in many of the slots. There must have been over 100 QO breakers in that panel.
