Tanning Bed Disconnects?

We are currently upfitting a space for a tanning bed facility. I questioned the AHJ on the requirements for a disconnect on the hardwired beds. The AHJ replied that it depended on what the manufacture recommended. The real problem lies in that the only place to install the disconnects is behind the bed. Therefore making the clearance in front of the disconnect an issue. Anyone ever had this problem.

IMO a tanning bed is an appliance and some type of disconnect is required by part III of 422.

A breaker locking device may be the way to go.

I agree with Bob, some type of disconnect is required. The last tanning salon that we did had all cord and plug connected beds. This eliminated the clearance issues in front of the disconnects.

About 5 of the beds are cord and plug. The larger beds (approx. 10 beds) are hardwired. When can or can't you use a breaker lock in lieu of a disconnect. Can you believe that a few of these beds are almost 15KW 3 phase beds. Why would anyone want to sit in want is basically equivalent to a commercial oven?

Ask George Hamilton.
