what kind of load is a tanntng bed considered. For example the service for a tanning salon, are the beds considered continuous,or can i consider them as appliances and apply demend factors.Same question for laundrymat.both of these could possibly be on all day continuously or not.how would the service be calculated

Re: tanning beds

I would suspect that a tanning bed would have some sort of "duty" rating. I would guess "Short-Time." I wouldn't imagine the period to be more than three hours at a time at full load. A laundry mat I think would be the same. Some of the laudry equipment and mostly all the lighting may be at continuous load, but certainly not all. You will probably have to itemize the appliances and not lump it all into one category. :)

Re: tanning beds

There are no demand factors for commercial laundrymats.

Do a search on this site for tanning and you can get a lot of info, this has come up before.

I was surprised that some of these tanning beds run 50 amps 3 phase.

IMO both of these occupancies need to have services that can carry the entire load continuously, if you where the owner of of either of these business's that would be the plan.

Re: tanning beds

There is a degree of unknowns to consider. I would investigate simiiliar instalations for demand calculations.

Power Company customer sevice reps may offer suggestions.

If Britney Spears becomes a client calculate 125%

Re: tanning beds

I have designed and installed several tanning salons. The beds that we have installed use a fair amount of electricity. The best advice is to call the bed manufacturer and ask them what size OCPD they require for the bed and use the 80% multiplier to find full load amps. After a design I always go back and check everything after completion. Most beds that we have installed have used anywhere from 55%-75% of the OCPD that the manufacturer recommended. Even the 3 phase beds. I installed 1 bed that required 2- 60A 208V 3phase circuits and used approximately 39A per cictuit!!! One other thing to consider is to use a full size neutral. Most manuf. recommend them.
