I have seen this numerouse times in older buildings. Don't think you can do it anymore. Can someone quote the code section please?

See 240.21.

Conductors supplied under the provisions of 240.21(A) through (H) shall not supply another conductor except through an overcurrent protective device meeting the requirements of 240.4.

Keep in mind that the section David posted applies only to feeders and not service conductors.
