Hello All,
If the contractor provide tap of switchboard bussing using UL 891 standards, does UL rep need to come to the site and check the work after it's being done? I mean how do we know the contractor follow exactly the standards?
Thank you.

Thank you.

Unless the manufacturer of the switchboard has provided a listed way of tapping off of the bus, there is no "using UL 891 standards" for field work like what you describe. You could, I suppose, call for a Field Inspection by UL, expect it to cost around $20k (that's what I paid last time it happened).

If the contractor use a retrofit kit from a manufacturer, let's say GE, do they still have to go to UL for field inspection?

Maybe, maybe not. My understanding is that at least some such kits are only listed if the manufacturer does the install.
Correct. It must be listed as a FIELD retrofit kit. Some are, some are not.

That said, is the project going to be inspected? If so, the inspector will likely want to see evidence that the tap was done with a listed field retrofit kit, so save any boxes or instruction sheets. If not and the gear is already installed and accepted, what the user does with it is their own business and between them and their insurance underwriter.
