We install Heat Pump Air handlers, usual heat package is 5 to 10 KW. Many times the original feeder - any where from 80 to 120 amps is used to tie into the new Equipment. Sometimes there is a breaker at the air handler, often times not.

What is the Code correct method to accomplish this? Company view point is not to change the main panel breaker, but tap the existing wire using the correct size wire for amp rating.
Thanks - Ignatz

Review the 2002 NEC at 240, overcurrent protection, II, Location, 240.21 Location in circuit, (B) Feeder Taps. This section covers 10', 25',over 25' long taps, etc. See in your specific application falls within those requirements.
