Tap Rule

We are reviewing a set of drawings for a client.

They have a 800 amp CB on the incoming service which feed a transfer switch. The transfer switch is also fed by a 600KW generator with an 800 amp CB on its output.

On the load side of the transfer switch is:

1. 500 MCM cables, one per phase, feeding a MCC

and
2. 6-3/0 cables, two per phase, feeding a 250 HP VFD.

I believe this is OK but wanted to get others opinions. It seems as if this installation is two tap conductors with no feeder conductor.

Any comments? Thanks.

Re: Tap Rule

What is the distance to the MCC and VFD from the transfer switch. and what is the distance from the Main OCPD to the transfer switch?

Do the MCC and VFD have MCB?

Sounds like you may need OCPD next to the ATS to protect the 2 feeders.

Re: Tap Rule

Both the MCC and the VFD have 400 amp breakers. The distance to each is less that 25 feet.
