tapping a garage door opener circuit for 1 light

I have never added anything to work with a garage door opener outlet but I was told that it is ok to to tap this circuit to put a pull chain light in the attic above the garage, is this application ok?

Just curious, do you guys run a dedicated circuit for the garage door openers or just put them on a circuit that serves the receptacles and lights in the average two car garage?

I used to run a separate 12-2 circuit for the OH doors, but now I normally put them on with the garage receptacle circuit... and for some unexplainable reason I always run a separate lighting circuit for the garage, guess i'm worried if they decide to install HO fixtures at some point...

The typical garage door opener is rated at 1/2 HP (in my experience anyway.) 1/2 HP = 373 Watts = 3.1 Amps at 120V. Feel free to add several lights to that circuit, you won't hurt a thing.

The majority of the time I put them with the garage recept. unless there is an abundance of them and I am worried about load. At the very least I will just have 2 garage recept. circuits. I do not usually put lights with the openers on the off chance the motor causes a little surge in the lights. The only suggestion I would have that I haven't seen mentioned is that the DO recept. be on the line side of the GFI. Don't need the circuit faulted and doors won't open.
