Hi Guys

I got a remodel coning up and have a problem. Its a four story dorm building, general lighting panel close by (40 feet or so). I'd like to tap it in the vertical trough which feeds it and run over to my new panel in the remodeled area. I have'nt used T taps in about 15 years though, What are the new ones called and what do you guys recommend using. I'll need something in a 4/0. I don't have an idea of the existing load yet but I will.

I don't see where the tap rules would apply here either.
Any help guys.

Forget tap rule until you determine the actual load on the feeder and this might be a lighting feeder and if your thinking you need a 4/0 tap thats a lot of load !! It could get very expensive to change it out later???

there's a product called kup-L-tap that works quite well. here's the link.

you can hot tap with it, as long as what you are attaching isn't under load
when you make the tap. i've used them quite a bit in industrial settings.
never any problems. i've used mostly 4/0 and 500 mcm ones.

The tap requirements for feeders are located at 240.21(B).

There are no tap requirements that would satisfy 40 feet.

Use the same size conductor that is supplying the panel and it will no longer be qualified as a tap...just a splice.
