Tapping Riser

Not sure size of existing riser feeding the two panels and I’m getting that info. Have to tap extg. riser( in electrical closet) with new feeder containing 4 #4’s. The basic premise of doing this is you would cut away/intercept section of existing riser pipe, install box for your tap( say above panel) then install new pipe/wire back down to existing panel( which could be gutter tapped)? Obviously also install your new pipe with 4 #4’s from tap box.

Yes you would cut the existing riser and insert a box, hopefully there is a coupling close by to remove a section of conduit. You would have to change the conductors going in one direction unless you pulled out the existing conductors and pulled them back in.
