the building was a small two story, stick frame single family home built in the early 50's...in the early 70's it was converted to a tavern with a small dining area...the new owner will now feature live music in what was the dining area...he is now planning to add a drop ceiling for better sound purposes...we will be adding, replacing and relocating 20 +/- existing ceiling pendant lights to recessed in the drop ceiling...all of the existing lights are wired in romex...very few (if any) of the existing light JB's can be moved...(Ques #1) is it legal for me to add romex jumpers to the the new light locations??...if not i will use MC jumpers...(Ques #2) is it legal to have the existing romex in the same JB as the new MC jumpers??

NM cable is not permitted to be run exposed above a suspended ceiling. (See 334.12(A)(2))

...(Ques #2) is it legal to have the existing romex in the same JB as the new MC jumpers??

There is nothing wrong with NM cable and MC cable installed into the same J-box provided that the MC cable is bonded properly.

If the remodel is going to increase the possible occupancy level he may be opening a whole new can of worms consisting of building/fire codes including the possibility of having to comply with NEC Art 517 if the new occupancy level is 100 or more persons.

Around here, this would be a "change of use" permit, nothing would grandfather in, so as Chris noted, all the NM that is exposed(above the ceiling or not) would be coming out

I think you mean Article 518 Assembly Occupancies.

Article 517 is Titled Health Care Facilities.;):)

Cool! So if a tavern is a health care facility, then I can just leave my $35 copay on the counter, drink all I can, then have the bartender bill my insurance company for the balance, right?
