Question from a e-mail:

Questions about CLASS 2 DIVISION 2 GROUPE G. Is it permissible to use ladder cable tray with TC-ER thhn or thwn cable that is rated for direct burial

Looking at 336 and 502.10 it does not appear to be a clear cut answer. Assitance ?

The 2017 NEC spells it out specifically in Section 502.10(B)(1)(6). I wish it didn't. TC-ER can be used anywhere regular TC can be. The converse is not true. TC-ER has a higher crush/impact requirement than standard TC. See Section 336.10(7)d in the 2017 NEC. (It was always an NEC requirement, just a bit harder to find)

(5) Type MC, MV, TC, or TC-ER cable, including installation
in cable tray systems. The cable shall be terminated with
listed fittings.

Did you mean 502.10(B)(1)(5)?

Why do you wish it was not spelled out? Are you opposed to using TC cable in CiD2 areas?

No; I meant Section 502.10(B)(1)(6) [2017 NEC] as I originally cited. It is the relevant rule in Class II as Gus' OP was about. I believe you sorta hashed in the analogous Class I rule.

I have no objection to Type TC in Division 2 in either Class I or II. As I mentioned if Type TC is acceptable, Type TC-ER is automatically acceptable; there was no reason to add it to the list as a separate item. It is that type of double reference that causes confusion. It gives the impression that there may be some additional restriction(s) on Type TC-ER that isn't placed on "standard" Type TC.

BTW, I note that Gus also asked about in the OP about direct burial (DB) rated Type TC. It is still Type TC and can be used anywhere "standard" Type TC is permitted. Again, the "DB" rating is an extended rating, not a restriction.
