What would be the reasoning behind not being able to use three conductor with ground Tray Cable in place of NM Cable Or SE Cable for a feeder in a residence?

Re: TC versus SE Cable

UL and the NEC

Tray Cable (QPOR) : basically limited to tray use, underground(if marked), and between trays.

230.43 Not a permitted wiring method

Re: TC versus SE Cable

Jim that is the code rule I think the question is why.

Why is the higher quality product prohibited from use where NM would be fine?

In my humble opinion Hal nailed it.

Re: TC versus SE Cable

I guess that the makers of the cable needs to step up to the plate and pay for the ul testing, just as did the the makers of mc and ac did with the bundling and stacking of 20 current-carrying conductors. The timing of this was almost perfect, that is with the very limited use of romex in a commercial setting posed on us in the same code cycle.

Re: TC versus SE Cable

Why did the code makers insert a rule forbidding NM cable above suspended ceilings in other than dwelling units?

Why are there product standards in article 422?

Why were AFCI's rushed onto the market despite their limitation to protect building wiring only?

The political argument could be made for all of these. The NEC is not immune from politically motivated rulemaking, unfortunately. :(
