I RECENTLY PURCHASED A HOME IN SAN ANTONIO TEXAS AND TELEPHONE WIRE AND CABLE TV WIRE WERE PLACED DIRECTLY ON GROUND AND THEN COVERED WITH A SOD LAWN. I QUESTIONED THE BUILDER ABOUT THE SAFETY OF HAVING AN UNPROTECTED WIRE THAT CLOSE TO THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND AND TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS CODE. CAN ANYONE PROVIDE ME ADVISE ON THIS.

Re: TELEPHONE CABLE

The telephone and cable wiring inside your home is exposed. This is not a real hazzard, but could easily be damaged by yard work.

Don't worry about it. Someone will be replacing them real soon! :D

Heh heh, you could "help it along" a little by chopping the lawn with a shovel in a few widely spaced places along the path. Stomp the divits down and no one will be the wiser.

Re: TELEPHONE CABLE

When he said that it ?was code,? there are two ways you could interpret that statement. One way (the way he probably hoped you would interpret it) is to mean that code requires it. The other way (the way he probably hoped you would not notice) is to mean that code does not forbid it. Generally, if the NEC does not explicitly forbid something, then we can infer that it is allowed. The truth is that what he did was allowed. It was not required, but it was allowed.

You can complain if you wish, but it is going to come down to money. If he did what at least the minimum of what he was contracted and paid to do, then someone is going to have to pay him again, if they want it redone some other way.

Best of luck from a current North West US resident who is proud to be a native of San Antonio. ;)
