I have an existing installation where a telephone equipment (main incming telephone service and patch panels) are installed in an electrical closet. Anyone know of a code reference that states this is a violation?

Thanks.

As long as your working clearances are met I see no problem.

Where in NY are you?

SECTION 110.25
Section 110.25 - Add a new section 110.25 to read as follows:
110.25 Electric Closets. Electric closets shall be dedicated to electrical distribution
equipment. Electric closets shall be identified as such, shall be sized to provide the
applicable working space requirements, and shall not be used for any other purpose
including storage.

Not only can you have the telephone equipment in the room, but you can also have a telephone operator set up an office in the room, complete with desk, chair, file cabinets, fridge, microwave, and water cooler. The only relevant requirement, as has already been mentioned, is working clearances.

When you stop and think about it what makes telephones work ? "Electrical" wouldn't it make sense that they could be in an electrical room, unless there is a minimum voltage requirement for said electrical room 120/208 :D

Thats crazy.

How about if I call it a mechanical room that happens to have some electrical equipment in it.

I have seen everything from computers, fire alarm, phone, security and usually never big enough. They dont even got be in a room.We service one factory that even has worksop in it.

I was just in a restaraunt we did, adding a few receptacles. The electric room also had the telephone equipment, NAC panel, and security panel, and originally had sufficient clearances.

The sign on the door says "Electric room. No storage"
I had to empty 5 boxes out of the room just to enter, much less work.

I can't see equipment that isn't electrical as an issue. It is all the other junk that is stored in these rooms that is a problem.

Yikes!

I would have loved to hear you explain to the person who did that why it was a bad idea......

Its OK to have the telephone equipment in the electrical room but it can not be in the dedicated electrical working space, as it not electrical equipment - see 90.3. Mike Holt has a graphic that shows this.
