I ran accross a couple of terms which I have never heard before, in my 40 some years of work experience (electronic & electrical) and would like to know the orgin of the terms:

undergrounded & undergrounding

Re: TEMINOLOGY

Is it possible the terms were being used to describe the process of placing or moving overhead cables and conductors to underground.

I have seen these two terms used during utility projects where transmission and distribution lines were being relocated from overhead poles to direct buried.

Re: TEMINOLOGY

In every language, including English, every single word was first spoken by one person at one point in the past. Sometimes new words become popular through common use, and wind up becoming ?real words,? instead of merely being ?invented words.? For example, in 1969 a new word was added to the French language? ?aluner,? (I hope I spelled that right) which means ?to land on the moon.? In the same way, I think ?blog? is going to make its way into our dictionary soon, if it is not already there.

I think you are looking at someone?s idea of an ?invented word.? I equate it with the use of the word ?coffee? in the context I heard from a waitress long ago, when she said to me, ?I?ll be back in a moment to coffee you.? If I hadn?t been stunned by the strange expression, I probably would have fallen over laughing. :D

Re: TEMINOLOGY

I've been around the use of underground as a verb for decades. It's not used alot, but it's there.

Alot like, "I'll pencil you into my schedule," and similar use of traditional nouns in "unconventional" ways.

Re: TEMINOLOGY

Underground is used a lot in the realm of electric utilities. Just like we use the term overhead. We have done some undergrounding and the telephone company has done a tremendous amount of undergrounding. That term is alive an well in utilities where they have both overhead and underground lines.

After undergrounding has been done on the line from Mooresville to Gasberg, it will be undergrounded. :D
