Lets say that you wanted to set up your business so that you did 4 or 5 medium sized projects, say $20-30k per year. Or at least that's where i see myself now.
I don't want full time help if I can avoid it. Or at least I dont think I do. I want help to pull the wire through the house if it is a McMansion, or help running pipe and pulling wire if the job requires that, or hanging the 50 light fixtures if it takes that. I E ounce I've gotten the job to the point that I can hustle and finish it in the time frame that i have to get it finished, I want to finish it myself.

But I am wondering how that sits with taxes and benefits and employee work status. Now when I did commercial work, that is exactly how I was worked. I worked like a trojan for a month until they got the project over the hump and then I was let go.

But was that right wrong or other wise? Are there temp agencies that hire out electricians?

What I have done in the past is go to your local techniclal trade school and talk to the electrical dept head and see if they have a corp. system w/ juniors & seniors. You have one for a week & the next week you have another one. So every other week you get the same young man. With this in mind as I did you can get yourself an apprentice that you help train to your liking. But be careful two of these students are now my son-in-laws.:D

Thanks for these tips! I am going to have to start copying pieces of these post and storing them on my computer so that I can refer to them.
As for the son in law bit, since I don't even have kids, at best they would get busted for child endangerment or something like that.

In the past I have checked all the temp agencies in my area and was unable to get any help whatsoever. They all said the licensing and regulation issues were a factor plus the workers were just not there. All had regular jobs with someone. One way is to find another contractor who is just starting out and hire each other back and forth until one of you has too much work on their own to help the other. If both are legit then it is a simple 1099 deal. Ask around at the supply house's. I also checked IBEW. I won't comment because I believe the subject is taboo on this board. Both sides trip their breakers on the subject.

The joke of every school, city college, university I ever attended was the job placement office. Every campus has one, even if its a simple job board with tacked postings. I took jobs and room rentals from postings found their or on some random pillar found on campus.

The joke of the placement office was how much the job descriptions wanted in experience, and how narrow the skill sets were. For me, in the 1990's it was mostly computer skills, or experience. One reason I puked when ever reading this BS, was because the same jobs would get re-posted shortly after being filled, and the nervous body language of the academic manager in charge of this crap was always a bad sign.

Young people in school want an honest, simple way to become independent, keep busy, or get a life, but they can also be spoiled quitters, and are very much alone in developing their nose for BS in life and on job bulletin boards.
