I was asked this question about a job today and figured it would be an easy look up.
A job site has a job trailer that has a tongue out front with a full chassis and wheels. It could be hooked up to a truck and pulled away in minutes if someone chose to.
Under 550 in the 17 cycle this would have been easy as I would have said this is a non-dwelling mobile home as it has a chassis built in. In the 2020 code the requirement would fall to a relocatable structure within 545.
The question at hand was..."is it legal under the nec to mount an overhead temporary service to a relocatable structure?"
Under 550 it is spelled out in 550.32 "the mobile home service equipment shall be located adjacent to the mobile home and not mounted in or on the mobile home."
With the change to 545 there is only really part II to take into account.
It is regularly spelled out that temp services are to be built as permanent services but I am failing to find this in the code.
In this case the trailer would have OSB with a meter, overhead mast (assume to the correct height and meeting the requirements) and a panelboard that is rated for the environment with the needed GFCI protected receptacles for the temp work on the jobsite as well as a pair of ground rods run with number 6 solid.
Can anyone cite a code article that would make this a non-code compliant under the 2020 code? I don't care to hear a rule of thumb, ask the ahj or utility. I want to know if there is a violation to the NEC.
