At our FGD scrubber construction project we need to run temporary, three-phase 480V power to a 1.5 hp oil pump and also to a 3kW heater in the reservoir. One of the contractors says that we cannot use a simple "safety switch" to turn the pump or the heater on and off. This OSHA paragraph seems to support his contention:
1910.334(b)(1)
"Routine opening and closing of circuits." Load rated switches, circuit breakers, or other devices specifically designed as disconnecting means shall be used for the opening, reversing, or closing of circuits under load conditions. Cable connectors not of the load break type, fuses, terminal lugs, and cable splice connections may not be used for such purposes, except in an emergency.
Will an inexpensive, properly rated manual motor switch do the trick for us?
