The temporary string lights we've just received have a polarized plug installed from the factory.
There is no ground plug. We also cannot find anything stating that they are double insulated. The cord type is SJT. Our safety department is looking for some kind of documentation that states if we plug the lights into a GFCI, we will be adhering to OSHA guidelines. Please help.

Re: Temporary lighting

No, they are made by a company called "woodhead".
We called them and we weren't told a whole lot except that they do make stringlights with ground plugs

Re: Temporary lighting

The lights you are referring to have no exposed conductive surfaces as Don questions you about and does not require a EGC connection.

We use allot of these "string lites", I have one project with 45 sets of 10 lamps per string going now, and they pay for themselves in labor savings verses running cable and installing pigtail sockets and guards.

Click here for Daniel Woodhead product info notice the OSHA compliance statement.

Re: Temporary lighting

This code section might help as well:

406.3(E) Cord-and-Plug-Connected Equipment. The installation of grounding-type receptacles shall not be used as a requirement that all cord-and-plug-connected equipment be of the grounded type.
FPN: See 250.114 for types of cord-and-plug-connected equipment to be grounded.
After reading the FPN, go to 250.114, which says what Don are Roger are discussing.
250.114 Equipment Connected by Cord and Plug.
Under any of the conditions described in 250.114(1) through (4), exposed non?current-carrying metal parts of cord-and-plug-connected equipment likely to become energized shall be grounded.
