Is it code to use exposed SEU cable on a temporary power pole? I built it for a contractor that is going to install it at the beach. One of my friends is telling me I should have used SER and conduit.

I called the utility asked for a spec, they pointed me to the city inspector. I emailed the inspector and he said whatever I normally do is fine :?.

As far as the NEC it looks like I am in the clear with my interpretation of the code.

Why would you use SER?

I think I know where you are going with this question. Like I used to, you think SER means 4 conductors. While most of what we deal with is 4 conductor, SER also comes in a 3 conductor cable. My SH manager straightened me out on that.

Yes even though SER is most commonly known as a 4 conductor cable it is available in 3 conductor the R just stands for “round” type cable versus the flat. Although your supplier most likely doesn’t stock it.

Per NEC there is no SEU or SER, there is just type SE cable.

Answer to OP mostly comes down to does he need a cable with separate EGC or is this cable used as service conductors where separate EGC is not an issue?
