The power strips that are used for surge protection are labeled Temporary Power Taps. Can they be used in a permanent application or are they considered a temporary wiring and after 90 days would have to be removed? I could not find anything in NEC on this. Are they extension cords?

Per UL, they are not an extension cord. They call these relocatable power taps. They cannot be permanently installed by securing them to the structure or building surface, however they can be used permantently if just laying on the floor or surface of the work area.

I think it is ironic that it is not considered acceptable to install them in a permanent manner yet many of them come with mounting ears for just that purpose.

I agree Bob. It's also ironic that you can not plug one into another. Looking under my desk right now I see over 30 things plugged in to various receptacles and power strips. And they're all on the same circuit.

All of the strips I have seen have "keyhole" type mounting provisions which allows them to be removed without tools. Since no tools are required I do not consider them as permanently mounted.
