We do mostly machine safeguarding for industrial facilities. During a walk thru last week our customer showed us a hydraulic power unit test station they use after rebuilding their power units in house. The test station has a motor control center with a lockable knife type disconnect and start and stop buttons. The power cord for the units comes out the bottom of the mcc and has flying leads that they connect to the power unit motor with wire nuts. During an insurance walk thru the insurance person noted that the wiring to the motor wasn't safe. What would be a safe, effective, quick and code correct way to wire these power units up for testing purposes. They test approx. 5-10 units per week. Thanks for your help in adavnce.

IMO 2005 NEC Article 590 applies here, specifically 590.3(C).

As I see it you can use the cords and wire nuts but you must follow the rules in the rest of the code. Proper over current protection, covers closed etc.

The cables will have to enter the enclosures at both ends by approved connectors 590.4(I)

It should go without saying that the grounding must be made up before energizing.
