All are a valid answers to the question. Each involves flexing and bending. Also if something flexes it bends. In www.dictionary.com flex is defined by the word bend.

So the problem is to guess what the author of the question was thinking.
The least likely one is dynamic.
Ribbon and condensor are about equal.
Peizo is most likely.

Only the author knows.

This was one of the very vague questions on my Masters Code exam.... does that sound like a theory question, or is it just me. I figured piezo or ribbon, I'm just not positive which one the test likes.

Wjat masters exam-- for electronics or electricity? Gee whiz--- FWIW I say Piezo although I never even heard of it before your question.

That's a wierd question for the exam. Do you live in the "Music City" ?

I live in trade regulation city, lol. No really though, there were a lot of "hard" questions like this. I wish it would've been monster load calc's or nauseating Series/parallel line diagrams, lol. I found another question in NFPA 72 even though that's not listed as the reference material.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone#Ribbon_microphones

"In a condenser microphone, also known as a capacitor microphone, the diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor, and the vibrations produce changes in the distance between the plates."

FWIW...

B) Dynamic Mic uses induction such a moving coil (the coil sends the signal, not the diaphragm).

C) Peizoelectric Mic utitlizes pressure on a crystal to create a signal... no moving parts.

D) Ribbon Mic is another dynamic-type microphone. The ribbon is suspended in a magnetic field and sends the signal but the ribbon is not flat, its corrugated.

But piezo can be quite thin, and transmitts a signal when pressure is applied to it.
Does not meet the criteria "a flat material that sends signal as it flexes & bends"

Thanks Smart$, and everyones comments. I answered Condensor Mic on the exam, but only because it was the only mic I'd heard of before taking the exam. Unfortunatley, when i was studying to find the "right" answer, I was only further confused.

All four of the microphones have some part that flexes. The dynamic has a flexure area near the edge of the cone, but could be a flat disk, the condensor plate flexes, the peizo flexes (such as a quartz crystal --- these are very flat), and the ribbon has to flex to produce movement in a magnetic field.

Maybe the question is which is the most flat. But all of these types can be built with a flat diaphragm.
