I had a question on the LA contractor exam that stumped me. I couldn’t find it anywhere it asked that if a neutral in a service overheated what size neutral conductor could be used in parallel to address the problem given it being engineered correctly.

Yeah without knowing the load it would be hard to answer that but I am pretty sure the answer would be the smallest size allowed for making a parallel connection

Good point, given that the question used the word overheating I would assume that they're referring to the IN.

Exception No. 2: Under engineering supervision, 2 AWG and 1 AWG grounded neutral conductors shall be permitted to be installed in parallel for existing installations.
Informational Note to Exception No. 2: Exception No. 2 can be used to alleviate overheating of neutral conductors in existing installations due to high content of triplen harmonic currents.
