ESD refers to ElectroStatic Discharge.
The goal is to keep a static charge on the worker or visitor from damaging sensitive electronics or other equipment that is being handled at the workstation.
It typically is centered on a wrist strap for the operator which is connected to an earth potential ground through a large enough resistor to avoid a shock hazard if the operator touches a hot wire.
It may also include clip leads to connect to the work or a conductive mat upon which the work in progress rests.
