ok so here it is.. t= temperature, w= waterproof, e=?. this is a factory setup, only problem is that the line current through this wire is 26.6A, an it is fused @ 30A time-delay class g fuses. everything in this equipment is heat-stressed. It doesn't make sense to me, but factory stuff is exempt seems like a lot of the time from the codes I follow at work. So what is the allowable ampacity of this wire for real?

You are correct, factory stuff is not subject to the code but is tested for suitability as used. Due to the amount of time it is subject to the current, the ambient temperature, etc. the appliance is listed complete with all of the components as installed and used. You may not take a single piece, like a wire, and use it the same way.

TEW stands for Thermoplastic Equipment Wire. According to the Canadian Electrical code (which mostly follows the US in cases like this) it's rated for 17A. However, this means nothing if the manufacturer has has the unit tested and approved by UL.
