314.23(B)(1) Nails and Screws. Nails and screws, where used as a fastening means, shall be attached by using brackets on the outside of the enclosure, or they shall pass through the interior within 6 mm (1/4 in.) of the back or ends of the enclosure.
Does the box in the picture comply?

Edited to correct code reference

Re: The "smart box".

I guess it would depend on what the "ends of the enclosure" means. There aren't any visible exterior brackets, and it looks like the nails are more than 6 mm from the back of the box.

Re: The "smart box".

In my opinion that code rule only applies to boxes like these, where the nail passes completely through the interior of the box.

Re: The "smart box".

How is this any different from a pancake box screwed to the bottom of a floor joist? It isn't on the outside and doesn't pass through it.

Re: The "smart box".

Don,

I believe you are correct that may have been the original intent. I also believe that since it doesn't say "completely through," UL used a more liberal interpretation and found the box compliant with both the cited reference and 314.43.

The box is definitely listed. I found it's "E-number"(E205857)on UL's "Compliance" site. [Product code: QCMZ]

http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/index.htm

I find it difficult to think UL would list a product they believed to be uninstallable.

Re: The "smart box".

I'm with Don on this one. I believe that section refers to mails or screws passing through the box. The 1/4" requirement is to maintain the inside dimensions for conductors and devices.

Anybody have anything to say about the sheetrock screws this manufacturer chose to furnish? I remember some here get all bent out of shape about sheet rock screws being use to fasten boxes to studs.

Re: The "smart box".

Hello Ryan, Thanks for recommending this site! While on the topic of UL conflicts, I am at loss over those ladder cups with the grooves cut in them for a #8 solid and secured by a wire binding screw. A kind gentleman from another site e-mailed me a UL sheet on the product. How can this be when direct conflict with the nec? article 110.14 (a) I think, don't have a code book handy....
