Theory on bonded neutral

I know on a SDS (portable) generator, that you're suppose to separate the bonded neutral in the gemetator, but what is the theory behind this? The ground and neutral are bonded at the panel it is serving. What is the hazard?

The EGC is now in parallel with the neutral and carrying neutral current.

So what happens if you don't disconnect the bonded neutral and what danger is there?

The EGC will carry some neutral current and the EGC may be a metal pipe, an uninsulated conductor.....not good

Think I got it now. I had it in my mind we were disconnecting the neutral going into the house, but we'rej ust separating it from the frame of the generator.. My bad. Takes a while for the light to turn on sometimes.
