Anyone using thermal imaging cameras for troubleshooting and preventative maintenance work? If so, is there a particular manufacturer to review.

Appreciate your input.

Depends on what you are looking for, a small inexpensive hand held for doing some basic stuff or a high end camera that has many features and reporting software options.

We had to call in a guy to help us find a fault in a floor heating cable. It was a great unit that found exactly what we were looking for, but he said it came with a $23k sticker price. The cheapest we found when thinking of buying one was $4k. That has been my only experience.

We picked up a Fluke TI20 a few months back for about $5500. It works really well for what we use it for. We use it for checking panelboards, MCC's, etc. There is a wide range of prices as you can see, it all depends on the bells and whistles you want.

My dad runs the front end of an infrared camera business for a guy. Their primary camera was worth over 85K.
All depends on what you are doing, and more importantly what your customers are looking for.

We own a variety of cameras and for what we do, our cameras run 5-8 hours a day 200 plus days a year we like FLIR, Top of the line has been in the 35,000.00-52,000.00 dollar range.

In my opinion if you only occasionally use the camera, the less expensive cameras are fine, and Fluke has all most always had good products.

Same here. The manufacturing plant I recently left bought a Ti20 while I was there. It did everything they wanted done. It is a very simple model and the resolution isn't the best, but it works for some basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance. We paid about the same as what eric9822 said.

Thank you for all the feedback. I?ll schedule a demonstration at a customer location and see what comes from it. If I did make a purchase it would be a lower end unit or something used. I?ve been told to be cautious on a used purchased as the repairs can easily get so high you just buy another unit. Is this salesman BS or the real deal?
