Does anyone have any suggestions for mounting a thermostat on the exterior wall of a sheet metal building?

In particular, we want to insulate the thermostat from the exterior wall. I've heard there are foam board boxes or something to put around the box. But, I don't know where to find them.

I don't think the owner will like the look of having these mounted on a plywood sheet.

That's what paint is for ;)

When it comes to replace that t-stat, there will still be a nice screwing surface there w/o having to penetrate the exterior shell of the building for mounting the new t-stat.

I don't think there is anyway to mount a thermostat on an exterior wall that will result in a satisfied customer.

It just will not get a real indication of room temp with it mounted on an exterior wall.

Good luck.

steve66,

Commonly a t-stat would be mounted on an inside wall or beam to keep a

more accurate temp. setting, you probally already know that!!

If it must be mounted on the outside wall, because that's where they want to operate the thermostat from, consider a different style. Choose a thermostat with a remote sensor. Mount the operating portion of the stat where they want it, and mount the remote sensor in a more reasonable location for proper temperature sensing. Repost if you want a brand or model recommendation. Pretty much every decent manufacturer makes one or several of this type.

Great idea. :)

I have two of those wired in series running my attic exhaust fan. One an outside temp sensor and one an attic temp sensor. The way I have it set up the fan won't run on cool days no matter how warm the attic gets.

Bad idea, outside wall. Bad... bad...bad.

Why?
How else would you let the soap tanks/recyceled water at the carwash know they are freezing ;) and not to engage...but rather purge.

Even on cool days I think you'd want to vent the attic. Unless attic envelope is insulated. A warm attic and cool outdoor temp would tend to make condensation.

It still has open vents, I just don't power vent it on cooler days, no sense paying to remove heat that I will have to pay to replace. :)

I don't decide where the thermostats go, the mechanical engineer does that. But the electrician has come back to me asking how to mount the thermostats.

I'm not sure why the ME has located them on the outside walls. (Although there is no inside walls. Just a warehouse with exhaust fans).

I guess plywood and paint it is.

I am also confused about this building freezing thing. Is it an ice manufacturer? Water here freezes at 60 degrees!!! Or at least I do.

My 2 cents...

Mount the remote temperature sensor near a return air grill, or even in the return air duct as it enters the air handler and have the temperate setting device somewhere in the space where it can be a clean install.
