They not happy with the Tamper resistant Receptacles

Ran into a job where they had alot of conference rooms , and some multipurpose rooms. Had to install all tr receptacles, client is not happy with the Tr. Had to inform them to be code compliant NEC 2020 requires it. It was recommended they could probably get the small conference rooms listed as 'offices' and not be required to have tr.

I have not doubled checked the code, but I think the business office tr requirment is limited to clinics, medical facilities etc.. Are we correct on this?

What type of occupancy? There is no requirement for TR receptacles in most commercial occupancies.

While I do think such devices would be a good practice anywhere children could be and have limited supervision It is not universally required.
2020 does appear at first glance to indicate TR in general "conference rooms". The 2023 added some clarity in wording of 406.12(5) to only include the requirement to the same general spaces from 2020 but only under specific type of occupancy, indicating the original intent:

2023: 406.12
(5) Within clinics, medical and dental offices, and outpatient facilities, the following spaces:
  • a. Business offices accessible to the general public
  • b. Lobbies, and waiting spaces
  • c. Spaces of nursing homes and limited care facilities covered in 517.10(B)(2)
2020 : 406.12
(5) Business offices, corridors, waiting rooms and the like in clinics, medical and dental offices, and outpatient facilities

Thanks for that info, I dont have the 2023 code yet. But it definitely needed clearing up. They actually did something right this time around in 2023. :)
