THHN from scrap UF-B

I wonder if the MC cable that has marked conductors is a result of a manufacturing error where they put the regular THHN/THWN stock into the machine mix, rather than the special unmarked stuff they use for making cable assmeblies.

After all, why would they waste money on marking conductors in a cable assembly when they don't need to?

I don't know if they actually waste money. It may be just as cost effective to stock only one type (marked) wire as opposed to stocking two different types (marked and unmarked).

The last roll of 12/4 I got had only the blue wire marked. :-?

Hard to say, but I would wager that since the vast majority of cable assemblies come with unmarked wire inside, they are saving money even with two type of wire that they have to make.

Ok, it was a dumb question. I should have looked at the stuff first... you can see without even stripping that there is no nylon coating on the conductors. And I stripped a few feet and there were no markings at all. I would not use this for anything, not even MTW inside a control panel because it is not marked.

On the other hand, what about those NM scraps for pigtails? I bet everybody does it without thinking. Has anybody failed from this?

last MC job I did, half the MC had marked conductors while the other half did not. Not sure if it was from the same manufacturer.

I know southwire does not mark the wires in their MC. I used it today.

No, it is not listed to be used for any wiring method except as a complete cable assembly. :smile:

Take a look at 310.11 for the marking requirements for conductors.

OK, if conductors are required to be marked every 24" I assume when I strip cables more then 24" to bring them into large panels I must deserve a red tag. :grin:

You would not win.Just cause we do things wrong and they pass for last 20 years does not make it legal.However if pigtails are under 2 feet how will he know if you used mc or thhn ?
