Ok as an electrician I have always believed THHN wire could not be run in walls etc. Now I am being asked for a code reference stating THHN can not be run inside residential walls without protection. Can anyone point me to the proper place in the 2011 book?

Welcome to the forum.:)

Check out 310.10 in the 2011 NEC.

310.10 Uses Permitted. The conductors described in
310.104 shall be permitted for use in any of the wiring
methods covered in Chapter 3 and as specified in their
respective tables or as permitted elsewhere in this Code.

Single conductor THHN installed in a wall is not part of a recognized wiring method covered in Chapter 3.

Cavie, did you see the word NOT?
I was brought up thinking the same way. THHN needs to be in conduit.

Is it your thinking that you could run THHN in walls without a raceway?
