Massachusetts Master Electrician, one man show.
Service upgrade--
existing 100 amp service fed underground with 2" pvc about 20 years old or so.

Ideally it would be nice to pull out the 100 amp feeder and pull in a 200 amp without having to dig up the yard. The run is 100 feet.

My feeling is that it won't come out easy.

Agree? Disagree?
 
Possible? Yes.

Difficult? Probably. Although 100 amp sized conductors in 2" pipe should come out like greased lighting even under "bad" circumstances. What size are the old wires?
 
Unless the run has been crushed it should be a piece of cake.

Pull the old out dragging a pull rope in with the old.

You should try to pull a mandrel through before pulling the larger conductors in to verify the pipe is not crushed.

But do you have to replace the conductors?

Wouldn't those conductors be utility conductors?
 
What kind of conduit? If it's RMC than it may be a problem because the conduit may be rotted out in some sections. If it's PVC I really don't see a problem although you'll probably need some sort of pulling equipment beyond human beings.:rolleyes:

It SHOULD be simple but you can't see underground.....at least I can't.
 
I'm with Bob (iwire) on this. Check with the POCO. In my area the POCO's own the service feeders whether they're overhead or underground. It's usually up to them as to whether they want to change them out or not. I know it sounds crazy but they don't seem to have to follow the same rules and regulations we do.

Most of the POCO's in my area only use 2"-3" or 4" conduits. For 200 amp servcices 2" PVC is permitted. However, once you increase the amperage or wire size we have to go to the next highest (whole #) size conduit.

Yeah - pricing a "Maybe" and "If" it don't come easy - you "could" loose some scratch if it don't.:rolleyes:
