I was contacted by the Better Business Bureau today for membership. I have put this off in the past but now I am curious. Does anyone have thoughts about it either for or against? Any input would be appreciated,thanks.

My thoughts are that the BBB is a toothless agency that attempts to purvey some semblance of authority to the unwitting.

I am a Member of The Denver area BBB. I really like it. most of my customers like it too.I use there logo on my truck , web site, business cards etc.

I also tell my contractors 1 of which is also a Member.
I have found that a lot of counsumers like to check out business with which they are about to hire thru the BBB to make sure the business is legit.

good money spent and is also tax deductable as they are a non profit business.
I subscribe to there least inexpensive membership and do not advertise in there yellow pages

BBB = Ripoff

BBB = Ripoff

Celtic took the thoughts right out of my head.

I did some work for and HVAC contractor that was listed with them and did not get paid. I called the BBB to report him so no one else would get burned. They would not do anything about it not record it or help me get my money. No reprimand and keep him a member. Now he's out of business.

That's the opening line.

What people don't realize is that you have a BBB "file" whether you're a member or not. People can still check up on you anyhow, and if all's good, they get a good report of you and you didn't pay a dime.

A company that does in-home sales pitches, like window replacement companies and the like, may benefit from BBB membership, since they can use that as part of their sales pitch. Customers, during the pitch, may ascribe great value to your being a BBB member, even if it will be of little benefit to them in practice.

I was in business for a whole month before I was contacted by the BBB asking to "subscribe" to become a member. A whole month, man I must have really developed a LOT of interest from the community in the first month. My company had zero track record good or bad, but they were ok with that, as long as I paid my money, I could be a member. This didn't make sense to me then and still doesn't today. Save your money, keep doing a good job and if anyone calls to check up on you, you should still be good.

Maybe they should try doing a PBS type fundraising drive, ask the people that use their service to donate?

I get calls about twice a year and they pitch me and I listen until we get to the cost for membership and I say no thanks and hang up.Had a call from an internet add agency the girl asked "what is your title" I told here "electrical god" after a short pitch I hung up well yesterday I received a credit card offer addressd to "God Electical"

BBB- Just another company

BBB- Just another company

You have to pay to be a member right... Now why would you pay someone to post bad things about you.
If a customer complains and you are a member, You HAVE to respond, even if it is bogus. All they do is call both parties to see if it was resolved.
They then post the results on their website.
Now why would I pay for that?
As stated before, a toothless agency, with out members they would not exist.

Here is how they hardsell in my area. I have a message from my call responder that the BBB has called and it is very very urgent I get in contact with them immediatly. I am thinking some pinhead has a problem and never even called me about it first. Call the number they left and it leads to guess what? Thats right- the sales department. Any company who operates this way is not ever getting any of my business.

We were members for 12 years and not one customer ever said that our membership had anything to do with why they chose to use me. On the 12th year the BBB was building a new facility nearby and tried to assess a special fee from us to help with their project?that was the end of the BBB for me. Since dropping the BBB my business has not changed one iota, and there is no difference between being a member and not being a member.

ITO, I am surprised that you didn't tell them that the new facility was right up your alley and when could you start on the electrical installation!
